ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Employment Counsel is a key member of the Legal team, responsible for developing, implementing, and managing LVT's global labor and employment strategy. This role will serve as the primary legal advisor on all people-related matters, ensuring compliance with diverse federal, state, and international employment laws (e.g., FLSA, Title VII, ADA, FMLA, etc.) and report to the Chief Legal Officer. You will partner closely with People (HR), Finance, and Executive leadership to perpetuate a fair, high-performance culture while mitigating legal risk and enabling business growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead Legal Guidance: Provide practical, action-oriented legal advice to the People team and business leaders on a wide range of employment issues, including hiring, terminations, performance management, and employee relations.
Policy Development & Design: Review and update employee handbooks, internal policies, and workplace initiatives to ensure compliance with evolving labor laws from the initial planning phase.
Employment Program Management: Maintain and continuously update LVT's employment compliance program, including wage and hour audits, classification reviews, and workplace safety protocols.
Contract Drafting & Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate employment-related agreements, including offer letters, separation agreements, restrictive covenant agreements, and independent contractor contracts.
Dispute Resolution & Litigation: Lead the legal response to employment-related claims, managing outside counsel where necessary and representing the company in administrative proceedings (e.g., EEOC, DOL).
Training & Awareness: In conjunction with the People team, develop and deliver engaging, effective training for managers and employees on topics such as harassment prevention, diversity and inclusion, and manager best practices.
Regulatory Monitoring: Monitor and analyze changes in labor legislation and case law, advising the business on necessary adjustments to workplace strategies and implementation.
Success Measurement: Success in this role is measured by the mitigation of employment-related litigation, the scalability of HR policies, and high internal stakeholder confidence in navigating complex personnel matters.
QUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
Minimum of 6+ years of relevant legal experience focusing on labor and employment law, with a preference for a mix of in-house and law firm experience.
Deep expertise and working knowledge of major US employment frameworks (e.g., FLSA, Title VII, ADA, FMLA, and state-specific equivalents like CA-PAGA/AB5).
Proven track record of successfully partnering with HR and leadership teams on complex investigations and workforce planning.
Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical business advice with imperfect information sets.
(Preferred) Experience with international labor laws and managing employment issues in a high-growth tech environment.
