Background

Pepper is the operating system for the independent food distributor, serving the $1T industry we all rely on to feed us every day. Our customers are the family-owned, regional, and specialty wholesalers supplying the restaurants and stores in your neighborhood.

We're the category leader, and we recently closed a $50M Series C, backed by Lead Edge, ICONIQ, and Greylock. Our agentic products handle the messy and manual workflows that the industry has run on for decades, rebuilding how distributors set prices, take orders, collect payments, and find new customers. We're growing quickly, with a large, untapped market in front of us, and a slew of new products on the way.

Why This Role

Food distribution is a foundational industry that has been overlooked by technology companies for decades. The code and products you ship enable the distributors who keep our supply chain running to move more goods and eliminate painfully manual processes. This role is at the forefront of a new vertical that’s quickly gaining traction and on a team that’s building with the best tools and tech stack available. Pepper is growing quickly, and you'll grow with us as we continue to expand to new frontiers.

Why This Role Matters at Pepper

Pepper is looking for a detail-oriented and technically strong Senior Accountant to help build the financial foundation of a fast scaling, multi-entity business. In this role, you'll own significant pieces of the monthly close while helping modernize how accounting work gets done, partnering on our ERP roadmap and using AI tooling to replace manual processes with systems that scale. You'll be close to the numbers and close to the mechanics that produce them.

This role is ideal for someone who wants more than a close calendar. You'll bring structure and clarity to a complex, evolving environment across our US, Canadian, and Australian entities, and you'll have latitude to change how things work rather than inherit them. You'll partner closely with FP&A, RevOps, and build out the systems as we grow.

What You’ll Do

Accounting close

  • Execute your assigned areas of the monthly close within a four day cycle: bank reconciliations complete day 1, revenue day 2, P&L and expense review day 3, balance sheet review day 4
  • Help maintain the close checklist, flagging blockers early and keeping your workstreams on schedule
  • Support close across our US, Canadian, and Australian entities, including intercompany activity and multi-currency transactions

Systems and process

  • Contribute to quote-to-cash and procure-to-pay improvement work. Help design the process, not just record the entries that fall out of it
  • Help make our Ramp spend and AP workflow more hands off through better configuration, rules, and automation
  • Support extending our ERP to handle more of the quote-to-cash process, reducing the spreadsheet layer between systems
  • Build dashboards and Claude assisted workflows that make financial data easier for the business to reach

AP and AR

  • Manage Ramp day to day: spend controls, approvals, card and bill workflows, accounting sync
  • Support AR in the ERP and contribute to bringing down DSO and lifting collection rates
  • Help improve the collections process, cadence, escalation paths, customer communication, and iterate on what's working

Compliance and audit readiness

  • Support indirect tax and statutory compliance for the Australian and Canadian entities
  • Prepare schedules and tie out balance sheet accounts ahead of Pepper's first financial statement audit
  • Assist with the technical accounting memos first-time audit readiness requires, including revenue recognition and capitalization

Who You Are

  • Experience Level: 3–5 years of experience in Accounting, Finance Operations, and/or a related role, preferably in a high-growth or technology-driven environment.
  • Close Execution: Hands on monthly close experience, reconciliations, accruals, flux analysis, and a track record of hitting a tight calendar. Multi-entity or multi-currency exposure is a plus.
  • AP and AR Ownership: Hands-on experience across AR, invoicing, billing operations, and collections, plus AP and spend workflows. You've worked inside the systems that run these processes, not just reported on their output.
  • Accounting Controls and Growth: Solid GAAP fundamentals, particularly revenue recognition and AR. You've supported an audit or built the schedules behind one, and you understand why a control exists before you redesign it. You're looking for a role where your scope expands as the company does.
  • Builder, Not Just Operator: You see a manual process and your first instinct is to ask what should replace it. You've automated something real, a reconciliation, a billing workflow, a reporting pack, and you'd rather spend a week building the thing that removes the work than a year doing the work.
  • Systems Oriented: Advanced Excel and Google Sheets, plus hands-on ERP experience. You're comfortable with how data moves between systems, and you're curious about using AI tooling to do more of the work. SQL, APIs, or low-code automation experience is a strong plus.
  • Analytical and Detail-Oriented: Strong attention to detail, with the ability to reconcile data, investigate discrepancies, and hold a high bar for accuracy and data integrity.
  • Comfortable in Ambiguity: You thrive in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities and imperfect data, and you bring structure to it rather than waiting for structure to arrive.
