About Pepper

Pepper is the operating system for the independent food distributor, serving the $1T industry we all rely on to feed us every day. Our customers are the family-owned, regional, and specialty wholesalers supplying the restaurants and stores in your neighborhood.

We're the category leader, and we recently closed a $50M Series C, backed by Lead Edge, ICONIQ, and Greylock. Our agentic products handle the messy and manual workflows that the industry has run on for decades, rebuilding how distributors set prices, take orders, collect payments, and find new customers. We're growing quickly, with a large, untapped market in front of us, and a slew of new products on the way.

We're a tight-knit, high impact engineering team organized around vertical pods, with engineers, product managers, and designers building together every day. We work with broad ownership, async-first communication, and a preference for shipping over ceremony. AI is both how we build and what we build: engineers ship with Claude Code, Gemini, or whatever gives them real leverage, and our LLMs and agents run in production every day.

Engineering at Pepper

As an engineer on the Storefront team, you'll work on Pepper's flagship product: the e-commerce system distributors run their business on and their customers order through every day. Tens of thousands of operators use Storefront to shop their custom order guides, discover new products, and check out, making it the highest-volume surface in the company. The work spans the core ordering experience on web and mobile, catalog search and product discovery, and the checkout and payments flow behind it. You'll be a key member of a high-ownership team, your decisions will directly shape the product, and you'll see firsthand the customer impact from the things you ship.

What You'll Do

  • Build the ordering experience end to end: order guides, catalog browse and search, cart, and checkout across our web and mobile apps in React, React Native, TypeScript, and Python, from database schema to user interface.
  • Make the catalog smarter: product content and imagery at scale, search and recommendations, and AI that gets each operator to the right item in a few taps.
  • Build for independent distributors: develop workflows for promotions, ordering, pricing, and payments, including hardware integrations.
  • Learn the core operations that keep independent distributors running: spend real time with the distributors and operators who live in Storefront every day, shadowing ordering, pricing, collections, and sales motions, and turn what you learn into product.
  • Build with AI: use AI tools daily to improve your own workflows.
  • Own meaningful parts of the technical architecture: help set the bar for code quality through code review, testing, and clear technical design.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, and Ops to turn customer signals into what we build next.

What You'll Bring

3+ years of professional full stack development experience, operating at the level of an engineer who independently owns features from design through deployment, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

2+ years of consistent hands-on experience in each of: a frontend framework (React, React Native, Angular, Vue, or Next.js), TypeScript, and a backend language for production web services. We use Python, but we welcome strong engineers coming from other languages.

Solid engineering fundamentals: modern frontend testing (Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright, or equivalent), SQL and NoSQL databases, software architecture, code review, and debugging.

AI fluency: real experience building with AI, whether through agentic workflows, LLMs in production, or serious leverage from tools like Claude Code in your day-to-day work.

Startup pace: experience at a fast-growing startup or tech company is strongly preferred. You break down ambiguous business problems and ship quickly.

Authorized to work in the US or Canada without sponsorship.

Nice to have:

  • Python, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, or Django
  • React Native or other mobile development
  • e-commerce experience, especially ordering, catalog search, or checkout and payments
  • experience in food distribution, convenience retail, supply chain, or other vertical SaaS

Why This Role

Food distribution is a foundational industry that has been overlooked by technology companies for decades. Storefront is where distributors and their customers do business every day, so the code you ship directly helps the distributors who keep our supply chain running move more goods and eliminate painfully manual processes. You'll build the engineering judgment that defines the next generation of engineers, shipping AI products that real businesses run on, on a team building with the best tools and tech stack available. Pepper is growing quickly, and you'll grow with us.
