Job Title: Tax Research Analyst, Product Location: Remote (US) Job Type: Full-Time
Who We Are
Holistiplan provides award-winning software built for financial advisors, focused originally on tax planning but expanding to insurance and estate planning as well. We’re known for our industry-leading tactical tax planning tools, including our Tax Report, Scenario Analysis features, and a variety of Explainer reports, all of which help advisors quickly make sense of complex tax situations and allow for insights that enhance financial planning for their clients.
Accuracy is the foundation of everything we build. Behind every report and calculation is tax logic that has to reflect the law correctly, and we’re looking for a Tax Research Analyst to help us keep it that way as tax law evolves and our product grows.
Position Overview
As a Tax Research Analyst, you’ll serve as the bridge between tax law and Holistiplan’s product logic. You’ll analyze new and existing tax law and translate it into calculation logic our product can use, working from product requirements to determine how a given tax outcome should be calculated. You’ll validate that existing calculations are correct, document exactly how each calculation works and what values drive it, and investigate reported bugs to identify root cause and propose corrections.
This role requires both deep tax knowledge and the discipline to translate that knowledge into precise, unambiguous, written specifications that engineers and QA can build and test against. You’ll work closely with product, engineering, support, and QA to make sure Holistiplan’s calculations are accurate, well-documented, and defensible.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Analyze new and changing federal and state tax law to determine its impact on Holistiplan’s existing tax calculations and identify where new calculation logic is needed.
- Given a set of product requirements, determine how a tax outcome should be calculated—identifying the correct inputs, order of operations, thresholds, phaseouts, and edge cases.
- Test and validate that existing tax calculations in the product are correct, including checking outputs against authoritative sources and known scenarios.
- Document how each calculation is performed in clear, detailed written instructions—specifying exactly which values are used, where they come from, and how they’re applied—so that engineering and QA can implement and test against them without ambiguity.
- Investigate bugs reported against tax calculations: reproduce the issue, determine root cause, and propose a correct resolution grounded in the underlying tax law.
- Identify and document edge cases and unusual scenarios that calculations must account for to remain accurate across a wide range of client situations.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments (e.g., IRS guidance, revenue rulings, new statutes) and flag changes that require updates to product calculations.
- Maintain source documentation (statutes, regulations, IRS publications, case law) tied to each calculation to support an auditable trail of why a calculation works the way it does.
- Partner with product managers and engineers to clarify requirements, review implementation for accuracy, and support regression testing across releases.
- Serve as a subject-matter resource for internal teams (product, engineering, QA, support) on questions about tax rules and how they should be reflected in the product.
Required Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of federal tax law and regulations, with the ability to research and interpret statutes, regulations, and IRS guidance independently.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex tax rules into clear, structured, step-by-step calculation logic.
- Excellent written communication skills—able to produce precise, unambiguous documentation that a non-tax-expert (e.g., an engineer) can implement correctly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an eye for edge cases and the ability to identify where a calculation could go wrong.
- Experience validating or testing calculations or models against authoritative sources or known outcomes.
- Comfort working cross-functionally with product and engineering teams, including reviewing requirements and discussing implementation details.
- Strong sense of ownership, meticulous attention to detail, and comfort navigating ambiguity when tax laws are unclear or open to interpretation.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, EA, JD, or Master’s in Taxation (active, inactive, or in progress).
- Prior experience in tax research, tax content development, or tax technology (e.g., at a tax software company, CPA firm, or law firm).
- Familiarity with individual (1040) federal and state tax planning, including exposure to pass-through entities and K-1s.
- Experience with tax research tools such as CCH, Checkpoint (Thomson Reuters), Bloomberg Tax/BNA, or similar.
- Experience writing functional requirements, test cases, or acceptance criteria for a software product is a plus.
- Familiarity with financial planning concepts and how advisors and accountants use tax information to guide client recommendations.
- Experience with bug tracking or issue management tools (e.g., Jira, Shortcut).
